The night before my young friend, Iva Place,
had her brain surgery,
Cheryl and I gave her this elephant.
Today she gave it to me, saying
she thought I needed it more right now.
The elephant has her hospital bracelet
on its wrist. In this self portrait,
I am holding a picture
of dear Iva along with the elephant.
